Air Source Heat Pumps

At Joneau Plumbing we install both "Air to Water" and "Air to Air" heat pumps. This compliments our underfloor heating systems and hot water provision.

How do air source heat pumps work?

An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air much like a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can still extract heat from the air even when the outside temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps need electricity to run so have some impact on the environment, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally. Unlike gas or oil boilers, heat pumps deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods. This means to work efficiently they may need to be left on 24/7 to heat your home efficiently during the winter. It is more of a constant ambient heat unlike traditional radiators, which are hot to the touch.

Benefits of air source heat pumps

Pumps are energy efficient – the efficiency of air source heat pumps is measured by a coefficient of performance (CoP), which tells you how much heat the pump produces compared to how much energy is used to run it. The typical air source pump produce's two and a half times the electricity it takes to run (2.5 CoP). You could even use electricity generated via photovoltaic panels to power the pump, making it entirely carbon neutral.
Can cut your fuel bills – according to the Energy Saving Trust (EST), a typical air source heat pump for a detached home where it provides all the heating and half of the hot water can save £700 a year if replacing electric heating, £50 for gas and £460 for solid fuel heating.
Are easy to install – They are stand alone units and as long as you have the space to place a unit either wall mounted or stand alone, it can be connected to your hot water and heating systems.
Require no maintenance – the EST point out that air source heat pumps are very low maintenance and should last 20 plus years. Also requires no fuel deliveries.
Can cool as well as heat – The units we install are reversible and can cool in the summer as well as heat in the winter.
